As we approach the day of turkey, potatoes, apple pie, and if we’re honest, not as many leftovers as there should have been, I am reminded of not just the food and company I’ll enjoy, but also the history of the place I call home. Nevada became a state on October 31, 1864, and it has a special connection to our day of (gratefully) feasting.

What is the connection between the holiday of Thanksgiving and the statehood of Nevada? Lincoln is the link! While recently reading through Carl Sandburg’s Lincoln biography, it struck me that Lincoln’s reasons for making Nevada a state and proclaiming a day of Thanksgiving were an effort to promote unity — a more perfect union.
