A NEW YEAR, A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR SERVICE

We’ve made it through the holiday season, and most of us spent the time shopping for and showering our loved ones with gifts. There may have been one or two late night cookie-eating marathons, as well! But now that the New Year has rolled around, it can seem like that spirit of giving fades away as decorations go back into boxes and lines form at the Customer Returns desk. Our challenge is to hold onto that atmosphere and redefine generosity, even as we look forward to what’s in store for us in 2018.

Redefining generosity may seem strange; after all, a gift is a gift. And of course, there is nothing wrong with giving presents, but “giving” is far more than a material exchange. The most worth-while thing you can give is your time. This doesn’t necessarily mean volunteering at a soup kitchen (though you can do that, too!); but reaching out to a lonely person or someone who is going through a difficult time. Even a quick visit with someone who doesn’t get out much can go a long way in making the new year brighter for someone else and more meaningful for you.
